Annual festivals and events in Ferndale include a Civil War reenactment, the Bellingham Scottish Highland Games, Whatcom County's annual Old Settlers' Picnic and Parade (at which everyone is invited to become an "old settler"), a downtown street festival and a citywide yard sale.  Ferndale is also the spot where the canoeing leg of the annual Ski to Sea marathon race meets the mountain biking segment.

Coast Salish Native American cultural influences are found in Ferndale's proximity to the Lummi Indian Nation, where the annual First Nation Stommish war canoe races are held.
